National Physics Olympiad Exam Preparation Program

The program is designed to prepare students for National Physics Olympiad Exam. Lessons are held for 8 hours in a week and 9th, 10th and 11th grade students can participate the program.

"Fizx4you" competition

This fun competition aims to reinforce the concept of equilibrium, evaluate team cohesiveness and the sub-structure of physics with four different games between the 9th grade classes.

10th Grade Science Competition

The competition measures the level of general knowledge in the fields of physics, chemistry and biology between 10th grade classes.

"Fizx Challenge" competition

"Fizx Challenge" competition that reflects the "Destination Imagination" rationale requires instant solution and team sprit and it is designed for 11th grade students.

"People of Science" interview:

Informative interviews made at regular intervals to share the importance of science and the achievements of Turkish scientists with our students.

National and international competitions and projects

National and international competitions play a role in motivating students to perform and excel and offer a lot more reward than just the winning prize. Competitions offer a chance for participants to gain substantial experience, showcase skills, analyse and evaluate outcomes and uncover personal aptitude. Competitions also encourage students to adopt innovative techniques and develop their ideas and skills. It is clear that the competitive element of physics competitions of different kinds can spur young people to study the discipline of physics more deeply and make them proceed to the truly fundamental experimental side. The fact that participation involves meeting young people from other countries can also be a source of inspiration. In addition, such an event gives a chance to talk to experienced physicists like university researchers, perhaps during a whole week of being together during a competition.

Physics Bowl Exam:

Physics Bowl Exam is an international physics exam held by American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) for high school students. Each year, approximately 10,000 students take a 40-question, 45-minute timed, multiple-choice test under their school’s supervision. Exam questions are based on topics and concepts covered in a typical high school physics course. To enhance the distribution of awards, Division I is for first-year physics students and Division II is for second-year physics students. Each Division has 14 regions that have been established across the country to allow schools in each region to compete against one another. School Team scores are determined by the sum of the scores of the top five students competing.

«LOST DARKNESS: THE UNCLEAN FACE OF LIGHT» PROJECT

The main theme is to provide a scientific contribution to the Light Pollution map of Turkey and to create/increase the public awareness about light pollution by measuring the night sky brightness at selected locations and school yards in the districts.

It started with 60 volunteer teachers working in 20 provinces and 45 districts. It was made scientific counseling by Istanbul Kültür University, Anadolu University and Ege University Physics Department and the Akdeniz University Education Faculty.

In this project, volunteered teachers who attended to the Astronomy Seminars for Teachers (AÖS) 5 and subsequent ones, carry out the coordination of the night sky brightness measurements in that district. On the other hand, coordinator teachers explain the project in detail to other volunteered teachers and school managers of other participating schools in that district by organizing a communication and sharing meeting. Newly volunteered teachers in those schools are given the project documents to do the presentation about the concept of light pollution for students and other teachers in their schools. They are also asked to do video screening and awareness education about the light pollution.  Coordinator teacher of the district organizes a night with the students and their parents for night sky brightness measurements in each participating schools’ yards. SQM (Sky Quality Meter) and smartphone applications are used in this campaign.  Collected data are used to obtain the “Light Pollution Map of the District”. Following these phases, “Light Pollution” themed poem, painting, writing, poster, design etc. contests are organized for students of all age group by the care of the Directorate of the National Education of the District.

It is aimed that all the universities that make the scientific consultancy of the project will present the offspring of this project to the Ministry of National Education in order to apply it all over Turkey.

On Friday, September 9, 2016, a meeting was held with the participation of 146 teachers and school administrators in different branches from different schools in the province of Çankaya in Ankara at METU D.F. Schools and then awareness trainings were started on other schools in Çankaya District under the coordination of the Physics Teacher Meral UĞURLU and the project coordinator Associate Professor Bülent ASLAN.

The multidisciplinary nature of the project will provide for the production of many projects, both at the national and international level, especially  TUBITAK and the Development Agency Projects. In our school, by applying this project with our students, various student groups have been established and continue to work under the topic of light pollution.

Other Studies:

Distance Education:

There is a Distance Education page in our school website. Explanations of the topics covered in the distance education page; answers to assignments and solutions to questions in textbooks. Our students can make use of this to make up for the incomplete aspects.

Supporting Courses:

For the 9th and 10th classes 2 hours per week. In the courses, activities such as narration of the subject to increase the success of the students, repetition of the problems solved in the class and solving the additional questions are made.

IDES (Advanced Education Classes) Program:

This program is applied to successful students in the academic direction. The aim of the program is to ensure that our students are successful in national and / or international competitions / exams and that they learn in-depth the subjects covered in the lessons.

Noon-Study:

Students are taught at lunch breaks for all levels to help them understand the topics they do not understand in class and to help solve questions they cannot solve.
